Various studies into recycled and alternative materials

Recycled Acrylic

Scrap acrylic is recycled into new sheets, giving an otherwise discarded substance a second use.

Process

Scraps of acrylic are shredded then heated in a plastics-only oven. Once the acrylic reaches its melting point it is removed from the oven and pressed into sheets.

Mycelium

Mycelium, the vegetative tissue of mushrooms, is a bio-material that can be used to create high quality products that are 100% degradable.

Process

The mycelium is mixed with a natural substrate to give the objects strength and structure. This mixture is then grown inside a 3D printed mold to create the final design. Two different substrates were used in this example. Straw creates a more organic texture, while sawdust results in cleaner and sharper lines when used.
